The Root River Trail System is about to mark its 25th birthday. And to celebrate a quarter-century of its existence, events are being planned trailwide the weekend of Sept. 16-18, 2011. In cooperation with the Minnesota DNR, all of the towns on the trail system have been working to develop a variety of attractions perfect for spending an entire weekend in Southeast Minnesota. A complete listing of anniversary events taking place is listed below.
 

LANESBORO

Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social

Kick off the 25th Anniversary of the Root River Trail System Friday, Sept. 16, 4-6 p.m., with free malts and shakes courtesy of the Fillmore County Dairy Producers Association. Location: Root River Trail at the Lanesboro Museum.

PRESTON

Trout, Trails, & Talent

Visit the National Trout Center in downtown Preston for a trout fishing activity/demo. Enjoy Country Music performed by Preston’s own, Janine Sherry, a Nashville & Branson performer who was recently crowned Ms. Minnesota Senior America. Take in a Historic Milwaukee Grain Elevator tour and Amish Market at the Trailhead. Evening activities include a “Picnic at the Pines” with entertainment, sponsored by the Preston Area Arts Council & the Preston Historical Society. End your memorable day in Preston by dancing the night away during Preston’s annual Firemen’s Dance.

PETERSON

Peterson Celebrates Farm Life and Wildlife along the Root River Trail

Saturday, Sept. 17, 3 - 7 p.m.

Peterson will offer a fascinating view of the farm life and wildlife in our region with live Country Western music as your background. You will see farm animals and watch a sheep shearing demonstration and therer will be wildlife, including an eagle, regional snakes and a trout tank.. You can tour a feed mill, visit a prairie, or ride to the museum in an authentic Amish double buggy.  And if you are hungry, Peterson will have food, refreshments, and a farmers’ market.

Trail Fitness Fest

Activity Stations, designed for family participation, will be located on the Trail between Harmony & Preston to highlight fitness and wellness.  The Activity Stations will be open from 9 a.m. to Noon on Saturday. Family fun activities like Potatoe sack races, Fitness Trivia, Tug of war, Stretching (yoga) & Dancing. The event is sponsored by “Project Fit Families” with donations to support Fillmore Central Schools.

Trail Art Show & Music Concert

A display featuring trail-inspired art will be open at the Harmony Trailhead (Visitor Center) Saturday & Sunday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. At Noon on Saturday, a music concert will be performed by Charlie Warner at the Visitor Center Gazebo. Lunch will be available. This event is sponsored by the Harmony Arts Board and the Harmony Area Chamber of Commerce.

Disk Golf Clinic

A Disk Golf Clinic will be held at the Harmony Trailhead between 1-3PM on Saturday, September 17th

WHALAN

Bicycle Safety & Family Fun

Sept 17, 1 - 3 p.m. Come, participate in Whalan's "25th Birthday Party" for the Root River Trail. 

Activies: Antique bicycle display (Shadow, high wheeler demonstations), Safety Booth (prizes given away), Bubble Machine, Fillmore County Dairy Princess (handing out free string cheese), Helmet & Bike Safety Checks (provided by Root River Little General Store), Free Bicycle Helmet Drawing, Apple Bobbing, Free Apple Tasting (Preston Apple Farms) an assortment of apples & carmel apples, Nanny Giggles the Clown

Houston’s Fall Family Festival!

Sunday, Sept. 18, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

10am  outdoor church service.  Food, music, games and good old fashioned family fun at our Fall Family Festival. Featuring many entertaining events – something for everyone. Visit our wonderful Nature Center; see Alice the Great Horned Owl as well as other animals.

TRAILWIDE

Pedaling for Habitat 

Bike the Trail to support Habitat for Humanity Projects in Fillmore County. Plan your own ride or follow our recommended family-friendly rides highlighting sites of interest. Stop at the Habitat stations in Preston, Lanesboro or Rushford to learn more about Habitat for Humanity and the upcoming build in Harmony. Register for some great prizes and pick up goodies for the trail. Support Habitat with a $20 donation and receive a commemorative anniversary long sleeve T-Shirt.  This project is supported by 50% matching funds from Thrivent Fillmore County West Chapter and F&M Community Bank. The stations will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is sponsored by Habitat for Humanity, Winona - Fillmore Counties.
